Motherboard: Asus P4C800 Deluxe
Processor: P4 3Ghz HT 512Kb
Memory: 2 x 512Mb DDR400 Cas2
GFX: Asus Radeon 9800XT
Soundcard: Creative Audigy 2 ZS
PSU: Antec 380W Silent
-----------------------------------------

Hi everyone, this is a pretty serious SP2 bugg that I've encountered. Just
to put you in my shoes, after installing SP2 my win xp was stable and
everything was working fine. I bought a new hdd and a new soundcard. I
attached them correctly to my motherboard and started windows. After being in
windows for a minute or two it crashed. But it wasn't an ordinary crash but
it was as if someone had yanked the powercable out. The only thing is, my
motherboard still has power when it happens. I've tested my hardware on
someone elses computer and nothing wrong there. The only thing i haven't
tested is my motherboard but it's stable and everything else as long as i
have SP1 installed. But as soon as i install SP2 it becomes unstable. My
computer only shuts down like this while i'm In windows.

As I said above i've swapped hardware and everything without any result. I
boot up into windows. I'll work a bit or not work at all and *poff* shuts
down. Let me remind you that this Only happens after installing SP2 which for
some reason was stable before.

If i damaged my motherboard during my new hardware installation it would
most certainly show itself while running SP1; which it hasn't. I noticed that
in SP2 i get new drivers for my P4 HT processor. It might be the reason, but
i'm not sure. I'm on my way to test my theory which I hope is right since
then I will have solved this huge problem. I've heard of people having some
sick bugs after installing SP2 but this one takes the price. Incompatible
drivers for an Intel processor?! Now if this was AMD i wouldn't be surprised
but Intel?

Ok, enough of the sarcasm. I just would realy love to hear from anyone about
any kind of solution.

Read this, it may apply.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2

I had to upgrade the BIOS of my ASUS P4P800 to the latest beta release.
Get the Intel Processor Frequency ID Utility

Otherwise, this sounds like a possible power supply issue or overheating.

The PSU is not at fault seeing as the motherboard has power during the entire
time and the shutdown only occurs after i've installed SP2 and i'm inside the
windows environment (including the account selection screen).

Though your post did mention something about the processor and the sp1 cpu
drivers are from 2001 it may very well be that the MB doesn't support the new
ones which i find pretty odd.

In any case i've sent an e-mail to asus but people with the same problem or
possible sollutions should still post here, please.
