Computer stalls on logoff

Ever since I've been running Vista (even with the SP1 upgrade) my
computer freezes on loggoff when I'm logging off a user to switch to
another--usually after that user has been idle for a while. After
enabling verbose logging, I'm pretty sure that the freeze happens when
the "user profile service" never responds. Unfortunately, the freeze
causes me to incorrectly shut down my computer almost once a day. I'm
tired of doing checkdisk's to fix the problem.

For users in this forum--it was a pre-SP1 problem. I'll update this
post if anyone in the SP1 forum has an idea, but I still welcome your
comments.

Try the User Profile Hive Cleaner at this link:

TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/42kj6

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

UPHclean has been a godsend on almost every one of my XP systems. I
have yet to need it in Vista.

I was looking at that earlier! Unfortunately, it doesn't work with
Vista.

Thanks though.

I have a new computer with Vista that worked great for 3 months and about
mid-Jan 08, it started doing the same thing. The PC was noisy and hot. I went
online and a lot of the tech answers involved tearing apart my PC and I
didn't want to do it. I realized that it was probably an MS update that
caused the problem and I was right. The easiest way would be to uninstall the
updates that came in right about the time the freezes started. I didn't think
of that until later. Instead, I went to Win Update and clicked "I will choose
which updates to dwnload and install". Then I went to System Restore and
restored my PC to early Jan 08. As it was re-starting it said it was
installing 22 updates! The PC was still freezing, so I went back to Updates,
checked the same box again, then I turned off my Internet connection (so
updates couldn't come in) and went back to Sys Restore and restored it to
early Jan 08. When it started up, I immediately went to Win Updated and
clicked "I will choose which updates...". Then I checked "view update
history" and all the late Jan updates were gone. My computer works like
"brand new" and no longer freezes up!!
Now, I am slowly adding only the updates that I think I need. The other
thing that I did, when I was certain that my PC was healthy and running
great, I went to Backup and Restore (click Start and type in "Backup").
System Restore will restore your PC from the C drive. In Backup and Restore,
you backup your PC onto a D drive. Now, the next time I have a problem I can
restore it from the D drive, and it will take my PC right back to that
healthy condition. I hope this helps. No more Vista freezes!!
