For about 1-2 years my computer ran fine until recently. Now, whenever
start up my computer it boots all the way to the Vista loading screen
seems as if it loads all the way, then shuts down with no warning. Thi
happens at the same point every time. I tried putting in the Vista DV
and starting that up in an attempt to reinstall or repair Vista, but
get the same results on the same loading screen. The computer is custo
built by myself

Specs
AMD 64 X2 4800+ 2.4GH
ECS GeFORCE 6100SM-M mob
BFG Nvidia 8800 GT
OCZ PC6400 2GB 800MHZ (Dual Channel
Maxtor 160GB 7200 RPM HD
Coolmax 600W CXI-600B PS
(Everything is using stock settings

Any help towards fixing this is very much appreciated

After the first year or two the first thing to go if the system is wel
maintained and not realizing any hardware faults is a simple low cos
item called the battery found on the board itself. When weakened tha
will start seeing boot and operational problems like sudden syste
restarts without warning

The usual hardware items to consider are board, cpu, memory, and don'
rule out a now shaky power supply. When starting a system up with al
post tests the largest draw on a stock pc is seen there. Memory fault
wouldn't switch the system off entirely but produce dreaded blu
screams! BSODs with error information

A bad cap or other component on the board no longer handling the usua
load or a cpu now faltering are two items to consider. If the hea
transfer isn't being seen from cpu to heat sink due to a failed therma
pad or need to reapply thermal paste the overheat protection kicks in

A poorly regulated power supply wimps on startup seeing everything g
dark. A failed hard drive also wouldn't turn the system off on it's own

I've already tried replacing the RAM and I've never gotten a BSOD o
the computer. I've also reapplied new thermal compound to m
cpu/heatsink. I'm gonna go out tomorrow and try replacing that battery

Seeing the system shut off completely usually points at that, the board
cpu, or a supply problem for the most part. The lithium batteries ar
coin sized and readily found in the watch dept. in retail stores lik
Walmart, Target, or other as well as their battery racks or at any Radi
Shack

The board's manual will list the their replacement number usuall
seeing 2032 as part of that. Eveready or Rayovac will tend to se
CR-2032 while Durecell uses DL-2032 there. You can get those in tw
packs at Walmart, Target, CVS even or at Radio Shack if not someone'
watch dept

The system shuts off and stays off? Or does it try to restart?

In my experience, a shutoff that is not followed by an automatic restart
indicates hardware failure. Unfortunately, diagnosing this can be
expensive, because you have to replace components to see what works.

Heat is sometimes the cause of the problem. Get a can of compressed air,
open the case, and clear all the fans and heatsink fins. However, if heat
has damaged silicon, it won't heal and software can't help.

On one old case the system would see a crash, cpu wouldn't run at th
normal fsb setting in the bios, and evetually wouldn't do anything bu
did have a large problem with a lack of case fans and a failed cpu fan
The next build went a full year solid and suddenly wouldn't do anything

The first there simply saw a board problem that drained batteries fast
The next simply saw the battery on the board give out without warning
In each case once a fresh battery was in you wouldn't think anythin
went wrong besides the cooling problem on one

The CMOS battery is NOT causing your problem. The bozo that suggested
that it might be should be publicly whipped.

Hi,

What about safe mode?

Try this: Remove all bootable devices except the optical drive from the BIOS
boot listings. Then try booting to the Vista disk. Does it still reach a
point and then shut down? How about with a bootable Linux disk?

I'm not sure that I agree that this is hardware if in fact it always reaches
the same point and shuts down. That to me sounds like a software issue.
