After automatic updates, the computer can't restart at all. The green bar
just keeps going across and computer can't boot. I have to do system restore
to an earlier point every time I switch on the computer, but when I go to
turn off and windows says updates are ready to be installed, exactly the same
thing happens all over again. Computer is new and the manufacturer said its
not under guarantee because it sounds like a software not hardware problem,
which is not covered by warranty. But I am convinced it is the vista updates
as it only happens when windows has tried to update.

I am having the same problem. It occurred with the MS updates that took
place on September 9, 2008. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1521. I have
tried eliminating the problem by doing each install individually, but it
still hasn't shown me which is the problem. HELP!!!!

It is my understanding that if Windows Vista came with your computer, the
manufacturer is required to provide support for it.

However, Microsoft also provide free support for issues related to security
updates. You would first need to identify which update is causing the problem,
I guess.

Harry.

I don't understand. If you installed the updates one by one, at which point did
it stop rebooting?

As it turns out, after another full day of running Windows Updates 1 by 1, I
was able to finally resolve the problem. I did each of the priority updates
1 at a time and it worked. Then, the next update was SP1 - I did this, then
was able to do all of the recommended updates after this. The computer is
now working fine (touch wood). I'll keep an eye on it for the next round of
updates.

thanks
