Computers Apply Updates but Hang on Shutdown

So I've been using WSUS for a while not, everything has been working out
pretty well. But over this last weekend, I approved some newer updates and
some strang things happened to a bunch of our computers. They installed the
updates at the correct time, initiated a restart, but never finished. They
didn't technically 'hang', because the screen saver was still active and
moving around (we only use the default logon.scr screen saver). The weird
thing is once you moved the mouse (or in my case remoted in via VNC and moved
the mouse) to stop the Screen Saver it would finish the shut-down process and
then reboot like it was supposed to. It looks like it started the process
as I was unable to connect to the machines via any RPC request (file system,
registry, etc) but never finished until that screen saver was halted.

I wanted to know if anyone else ran into this problem and if it was a
hopefully one-time issue or do I have to content with this now everytime I
apply updates? Thanks!

Have exact the same issue and symptoms, have you get any closer on the problem?

Unfortunatly, no. I applied some updates over the weekend again and the same
group of computers did the same thing. Hopefully MS will release another
patch to fix the problem shortly. I'm guessing one of the patches we applied
a short while ago must have hosed something up.

What i can see now, so have i found the reason and the solution.

In my case I only get the problem when I have added the switch
“NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers=1” if a set this to ”0”
the workstation did not hang on reboot, it’s only hanging when this is set
to 1.

So with this conclusion something was running and WU detect this as a
running process and the restart request was interrupted and crashed.

It was the default screen save that get’s active when nobody is logged on
that
gave me all this problems.
After I turn this off WU will reboot correct if no one is logged in.

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop] "ScreenSaveActive"="0"

Energy save schema is still active so the monitor will still go in sleep
mode after xx minutes.

Hope this will help you..

/Mikael
