Greetings Earl,
When you start up Messenger using the standard created shortcuts, the Windows Installer will
verify the existing settings for the application haven't changed since installation. If they
have, it actually does a repair on the program, which is what you're seeing.
In general the easiest and cleanest fix for this is just to uninstall Messenger from Programs
and Features in the Control Panel (alternatively you can use ZapMessenger if you're having
trouble,

Messenger 8.5 (
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/wlm85.asp).
After that it shouldn't give you any more grief.
