Configuring Windows Live Messenger

I have Windows Live Messenger Version 2008 Build 8.5.1302.1018 installed on a
computer running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. As far as I know I've
always had WLM however recently, evertime I turn it on, I've been getting the
message "Please wait while Windows configures Live Messenger" and it normally
takes between 10 to 15 seconds, could be longer. My point is why does it do
it everytime I turn WLM on - doesn't it realise that it's already configured?
Somebody help.

Greetings Earl,

When you start up Messenger using the standard created shortcuts, the Windows Installer will
verify the existing settings for the application haven't changed since installation. If they
have, it actually does a repair on the program, which is what you're seeing.

In general the easiest and cleanest fix for this is just to uninstall Messenger from Programs
and Features in the Control Panel (alternatively you can use ZapMessenger if you're having
trouble, http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/zapmessenger.asp), then reinstall Live
Messenger 8.5 (http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/wlm85.asp).

After that it shouldn't give you any more grief.

Thank you Jonathan Kay, thank you - it's now working perfectly and even seems
quicker. Thank you again.

Hi Earl,

Technically speaking Messenger shouldn't be any faster, but the startup certainly should be

Glad I could be helpful.
