What anti-virus is installed now? Is your subscription current? Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer? WinXP SP3 was released early last year: Why hasn't it been installed already? [Your post really has nothing to do with Windows Update. You would be better off posting in WinXP General newsgoup.] LR-451 wrote: > We have an older Compaq Presario which came with Windows XP Home. See this post for the KB article to troubleshoot OneCare install problems -
http://social.microsoft.com/forums/e...-22647bd5d8fc/ There is no version 3 of OneCare. If you do not have OneCare installed and encounter the black screen/no boot after upgrading to XP SP3, it is an update issue. If the black screen occurs after installing OneCare, you probably still have other antvirus software installed that needs to be removed. Support for OneCare is provided by Qwest if you are a Qwest customer. -steve LR-451 <> wrote: >We have an older Compaq Presario which came with Windows XP Home. The Anti-Virus is MicroSoft Windows Live OneCare.
Yes it is current. No other antivirus is installed on the PC. [Note the Hard Drive has been formated completely several times and complete reinstall from manufacturers CDs.] The last time I formated, did a reinstall from the manufacturer CDs, removed all programs except those required such as operating system, I.E., etc. This was done prior to connecting to the internet. Originally, XP Service Pack 3 was installed a year ago. I got laidoff my job and therefor lost my subscription to McAfee which was through work. I get Windows Live OneCare free through our QWest account. When I installed MicroSpft Windows Live OneCare on the Compaq Presario Desktop computer is when the problem started. I formated the drive and tried a fresh install from CDs. I have tried doing the install, then updates, then Windows Live OneCare as well as doing the Format, fresh install, installing Windows Live OneCare then doing the Service Pack 3 update. Same results - With Both installed the comptuer gives me the black screen and will only let me start in Safe Mode. I can add every XP update except Service Pack 3 and it runs fine. I am presently running 100% of the Windows XP & Live OneCare updates, etc. except XP Service Pak 3 and it works fine. I have posted the request in several forms as well as other sites. General, Application Compatibility, and others. This is the only forum where anyone responded. Thanks. 1. Right-click on the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/...tches/MCPR.exe 2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar). 3. Double-click on the file you saved in #1 above to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot. 4. Test. > I formated the drive and tried a fresh install from CDs. Was a Norton or McAfee free-trial preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? Did you try disabling all OneCare components (i.e., anti-virus; anti-spyware; firewall) and then enabling the Windows Firewall prior to installing WinXP SP3? Thanks Steve, appreciate it.
Ooops, sorry about the version 3. My Bad. it's Windows Live OneCare Version 2.5.2900.28 Virus and Spyware Definition Version 1.63.1861.0 Firewall policy version: 1.2.32.119 QWest OneCare support directed me here. <S> It only happens when both Windows Live OneCare and Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3 is installed together. As long as I do not install both OneCare and Windows XP Service Pack 3 it runs fine with everything else installed and updated. There are no other Antivirus programs installed. 100% sure. With the PC not connected to anything (LAN cable removed & no wireless card) I did a complete destructive format of the hard drive removing the recovery partion, etc. and reinstalled without a recovery partion. Then immediately uninstalled all programs delivered except the operating system, I.E. etc. Then I connected the LAN and started installing upgrades, etc. Last time I did the same destructive format of the hard drive etc. and then started installing the upgrades, etc. from CDs I burned where possible prior to connecting the LAN (Internet) Same Results. Apprciate the help, Thank you. The symptoms described sure seem to be a classic case of dueling antivirus
software. If disabling OneCare doesn't allow the update to proceed with a normal reboot and no trace of other security software can be found, I'd uninstall OneCare and then do the SP3 update. Uninstalling OneCare turns the Windows firewall on automatically. Once SP3 is installed, reinstall OneCare and activate with your Qwest LiveID. -steve "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <> wrote: >1. Thank you both for your time and efforts, I do appreciate it.
For now I will run with all updates except Windows XP Service Pack 3 and hope that I can find a job soon. Then I can get rid of Windows Live OneCare and buy my own copy of McAfee. Steve, Per your sugestion, " . . I'd uninstall OneCare and then do the SP3 update. Uninstalling OneCare turns the Windows firewall on automatically. Once SP3 is installed, reinstall OneCare and activate with your Qwest LiveID." I did that before making the original post but tried it again Wednesday the 26th. I formated the hard drive (Blank C: Drive, can't boot as nothing is on the drive), reinstalled the operating system from the manufacturers CDs delivered with the PC, removed (Uninstalled) anything that wasn't necessary, ran both McAfree and Norton removal tools, ran all Microsoft updates recommended by the Microsoft update website including the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (even the recent patch for correcting Daylight Saving Time in some Countries), and rebooted when asked as well as after completing everything listed. No problems. I then downloaded and installed Windows Live OneCare and actived the Windows OneCare Live using my QWest Live ID. As long as I don't reboot eveything works. As soon as I reboot, it does it's Safe Mode thing. FWIW 1) I ran the MaAfee Removal Tool prior to starting this whole thing but ran it again just now. I have done a destructive format of the hard drive 4 times now and there is no partioning or 'recovery' section. 2) I also ran the Norton_Removal_Tool.exe since the Symantec software is part of the Manufacturers Delivery CD (Each time I did an Uninstall of anything that said "Symantec" or "Norton" and ran the Norton_Removal_Tool.exe) http://service1.symantec.com/Support...hm&lg=en&ct=us 3) I have installed every update the Microsoft update website has suggested for this computer except Windows XP Service Pack 3. 4) I just ran both the McAfee and Norton removal tools again for a second time. Checked the Add or Remove Programs and this is everything listed: Adobe AIR Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX Adobe Reader 9 Client Tools [Note: According to the Help this is the drivers, etc.] Compaq Connects Extreme Graphics 2 Driver Pro Network Adapters and Drivers Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366) Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003 SiS VGA Utilities SoundMAX Windows Intenet Explorer 8 Windows Live OneCare Windows XP Service Pack 2 Everything runs fine this way. I downloaded but did not install Windows XP Service Pack 3. Disconnected the LAN Cable and everything runs fine except no Internet, obviously. I then ran the Windows XP Service Pack 3 update. Everything runs just fine until I reboot. After installing Service Pack 3, when I reboot, it will only come up in Safe Mode. Thanks again and have a great day! BTW, While I am not a computer Wizard, I am not a complete Novice. I started working with computers in the 1960s on mainframes before there were any PCs or even disk drives. I have used computers as tools ever since. When I say that I formated the hard drive I mean I ran 'FORMAT C:' without the " [/Q] " option from the DOS prompt. It has always been my understanding that this completely wipes any data or programs from the C: Drive on the PC. Thanks again for your help. I appreciate your time and efforts to assist. Have a great day! You have done fine, in my opinion, with your efforts to resolve the issue.
About the only thing I can think of that is left to check would be if there are any updated drivers for your various hardware devices available from the manufacturers. On the other hand, I think I personally would throw in the towel at some point - you've spent a really long time on it and the bottom line is that XP SP3 is fine until you install OneCare and that's when the problem begins. In a short while, OneCare's successor - the free Microsoft Security Essentials will be released. It is antivirus/antispyware only. No other features of OneCare, but the engine and signatures are the same base. It may be worth giving that a shot once it is available. On the other hand, there are some free alternatives for security software you might use. I've been satisfied with the free home version of Avast. Others have suggested Avira as being decent. Best of luck to you. -steve LR-451 <> wrote: >BTW, While I am not a computer Wizard, I am not a complete Novice.
