I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer. My updates were all going fine through
April 7th, 2006. Sometime after that I continued to do my monthly updates but
all of a sudden I noticed that my DVD drive (_NEC DV-5800A ) did not read
properly. The computer recognized the DVD drive but the drive kept saying
that there was no CD in the drive even though there was. Someone said that
the hardware had failed but I did not believe this because I have not used
the drive that much. I did find that if I used System Restore to roll back to
April 7th my DVD drive would work. When I then undid the Restore to April 7th
the DVD drive would still continue to work. Yesterday I again did my updates
and once again the DVD drive did not work. I rolled the computer back to
April 7th and then undid that roll back and now the DVD drive works. There
has to be some conflict between one of the updates and my DVD driver. Can
Microsoft or NEC help me? I shouldn’t have to do this every month…. Thank
you for whatever insight is given.

Mary

I have a Dimension 8400 with Windows XP SP2..... I to had a problem with the
DVD drive along with other problems like I would get error messages like
"Windows explorer has encountered an error and needs to close" plus once in
awhile the top three icons on the left in the start menu would double..... I
had to uninstall KB908531 and now my problems are gone well all except now I
have that update hidden and I'm wondering if I really need it..... But my
computer works fine now and I was able to install music jukebox from Dells
cd..... I don't know if thats your problem but it could be.... Is there
anyone else in here having problems with KB908531 ?
