I have two Pocket PC's connected to one computer.
First you want to give each Pocket PC a different name so when you log on
with Active Sync they are recognized as different units. (Partnerships). I
have Windows CE 3.0 so your menu may be a little different. I click
"start", "settings", "system", "about" and "device ID". Enter any name you
wish, just as long as the two devices have different names.
The first time you sync each unit you have to open a new partnership a
process Active Sync will start automatically if the name is new (One of the
units can continue to use the original name and partnership you already have
set up so you don't have to go through this procedure for both units if you
already had one of the units set up and synching). Then in "options" of the
Active Sync window you set up all your parameters and defaults that you wish
the unit to sync with and you are ready to go.
What you are synchronizing can be different in the two machines. For
instance on my first unit I have a large micro drive, so on that Pocket PC I
synchronize e-mail with all attachments. My second unit has an almost full
compact flash card, so on that unit I synchronize the same e-mail inbox
without attachments so I can save space. Basically you use the same
database but can customize and choose what each Pocket PC is pulling from
the main computer. As soon as you put one of your Pocket PC's in the sync
cradle, that specific unit will now be recognized and the sync will initiate
to the specifications you gave for that specific unit. I use Active Sync
3.7.1 and I don't know if the earlier versions can do this, so if you don't
have that version yet, hey, it's free so what the heck. I am running
Windows 2000.
For all of the problems of Active Sync, that feature is pretty cool and
surprisingly easy to set up and use..
IMPORTANT.******* In Active Sync under "Options"
you must set the "Sync Rules" to "Always replace data on the Pocket PC.
With two units you can cause a royal mess if you replace the data on your
main computer with the data on the Pocket PC. I think you can see the
potential for total disaster here. When I started to run 2
Pocket PC's from my one computer I was fiddling and learned the hard way
late one night. Thank God I had a recent backup of my main computer's
outlook folders.
If you log into windows as a
different user, with different desktop, different databases, etc. for that
user it will still work. you just need to establish that user's partnership
on their log on so they are synching their data not yours from your log on.
