I'm pretty sure you can reach the modem's control panel through a normal
browser, just search the manual for the right ip address (mine uses
192.168.1.1).
I could configure mine to automatically connect or to let me dial the
pppoe from my computer!

Hi
What you call a Modem is actually a combo Modem Router.
Usually the Router part does the authentication (ID & PW) as it coded into
it.
I do not know why you want a PW when you use a cable.
However what you want to do depends on how your ISP set the authentication.
If you do not want to mess around with Modem/Router (and you should not)
you can set a computer acting as a proxy server between your Network and the
Modem/Router. A proxy can be set with Log on ID and PW.

Do you connect to the Internet using a cable service or a ADSL service (from
a phone or other telecommunications entity)? If it is ADSL, is it PPOE or
"always on"? If it is, of all those, ADSL, it is possible to put the
connectoid log-on information in your computer and enter a password as you
connect. To me, this seems a big pain in the nether hindquarters but to each
their own.

This should not be attempted unless you have some reasonable level of
experience. If you royally mess it up, you might have to arrange a service
call from your service provider.

Remove the user information from the modem/router. Save/OK out of its setup
pages. Reboot the router according to it's maker's instructions. Note: there
is information about the connection that must stay. You only want to delete
user information.

Enter the computer's network setup page and do a PPOE connection.

Take notes of present settings before making any changes..

Good luck.
