Connecting device to PC generates ambiguous "Error" message

About a month ago, I successfully sync'd my new Windows Mobile 6.1 phone
with Outlook 2007 on my new PC. Since that time, however, I've not had any
success doing so.

When I connect the phone to the PC, WMDC displays "Connecting" for about 10
seconds and then changes to "Error" with a red "X". No error message or
ID...just the word "Error". No events are being generated in the Windows
event logs as a result of this error.

I've tried rebooting the PC, rebooting the phone, uninstalling Device
Manager > Network Adapters > Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter,
enabling and disabling Settings > Connections > USB to PC > "Enable advanced
network functionality", and connecting the phone to different USB ports on
my PC. Same error. I'm using the default Windows Firewall.

Not knowing what else to try, I used Sync Center to delete the partnership.
Sync Center now displays the phone in the "Devices" list and I can even
browse the contents of it. When I click on 'Set up new sync partnerships',
however, WMDC appears and simply displays "Error".

I'm stumped as to how to proceed. It's very frustrating that no further
troubleshooting information is displayed other than WMDC's ambiguous "Error"
message. Can someone suggest how I should proceed?

Are you by any chance now running Vista SP2?

Thanks. No. Windows 7 RC (Build 7100).

As I said, it sync'd fine originally...but now simply displays "Error".
