Hi,

A new Vaio laptop with Vista Home Premium.
(They pre-installed Norton 360)
Having a home network of a few computers,
I disconnected one of them and connected the Vaio instead.

I can get to the Internet but I don't "see" the other computers.
Looking at any one of the other computers - they see each other
but not the Vaio. (I did named the network with the same name)

I suspected it is the Firewall
(They pre-installed Norton 360)
I turned Norton's off AND Vista.No success.

Please advise,
Uzi,

Did you read the help files on connecting to a home network?
They are pretty extensive.
Go to Help and Support and type without quotes:
"network with xp"
XP machines will not be able to connect to much on the Vista machine though.

Your workgroup ID for the network is different with the default settings in Vista from XP as well.
You will have to change the default Vista workgroup ID to what is on your XP systems or vice versa.

Also XP systems will need a KB download for them to work with Vista systems.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

Hi,

Click start and type "network and sharing center", then hit <enter> to open
the sharing dialog. You need to enable network discovery and public folder
sharing.

Make sure both computers are within the same workgroup, share unique static
IP address and of course Public folder sharing is turned on.

Thanks to ALL who responded.
All inputs were useful.

Actually just by "turning off" Norton's firewall,
I got my Vaio on the network (two XP's and one 98)

One problem left.
Though the '98 machine "sees" the Vaio I can't read/write
because when I "click" on the Vaio it is requesting a password.

I can access the '98 from any (including the Vaio)
I have to sign in - but it was set up this way.

I didn't set up any password in the Vaio
and the other two XP's just access it.

Please advise,
Happy New Year

Try Network Magic. Worked for me. It's free to try.
