Greetings Adam,
There's been attempts to do this in the past with moderate degrees of success. However, one
major issue with doing this is that it ends up being a "hack" and therefore can stop working
at any time. For instance, Messenger Discovery has Facebook Chat support, although it wasn't
working last time I tried (I'm not really in a position to try at the moment).
In general, there are some great multi-messenger clients (as already mentioned), and a lot do
OSCAR (AIM/ICQ), Yahoo and others well, but Messenger support is really lacking in basically
all of them. It really shows more recently after the forced upgrade to 2009 last year, as a
lot of these clients don't support the latest version (or support it fully) of the Messenger
protocol.
