connection breaks every time

My connection stops every few minutes, very irritating. My internet doesn't
give me problems at all. My firewall is set to totally accept MSN messenger
and shutting it off doesn't help. A lot of the time I cannot see the picture
the other person is using to identify him or herself. I use verson 8.1and
windows XP.
Please, how can I make sure I keep my connection?
