I am suddenly unable to connect to the internet using ie or firefox. my
wirless connection is working fine in that I can download updates to windows
defender but on opening ie it says there is a problem connecting to the
internet. On trying to diagnose the problem I get a message saying there is
no problem with the connection. I have restored my computer to a previous
setting as I had loaded sophos anti virus but still no joy. I have also
rebooted several times. Any ideas?

If you can download updates for Windows Defender, then you /are/ able to
connect to the internet.

Whenever you ask a question about Internet Explorer, please tell us:

* what version of Internet Explorer you are using; and
* what version of Windows you are using (with the service pack number).

Do you have the same experience when you start Internet Explorer from
the 'no add-ons' icon?

If you have XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)

If you have Vista or 7: Start > type Internet Explorer in the Start
Search box > click Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)

Do you have the same experience after you have reset Internet Explorer
settings?

Problems with Internet Explorer can also be caused by by malicious
software ('malware') that you have unwittingly installed on your computer.

P.S. The wireless portion of your internet connection ends at your
wireless router. From there onward, your connection the internet is wired.
