Connection problems after most recent auto updates

After this weeks windows automatic security updates installed, the two
desktops I have (which both use Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapters WMP54G to
access internet through our Verizon DSL Router) can no longer access the
internet. Both the Linksys Network Monitor and Windows Wireless Network
Connection icons in the system tray show they are connected and active,
however the Network Monitor shows it is connected to the access point but
"has no internet connectivity". I also have three laptops running on the same
network which underwent the auto updates without any connection issues. The
two desktops are running Windows XP Professional with Trend Micro and Windows
XP Home with Verizon Internet Security Suite. I tried going through
Cisco/Linksys support but since the adapters are out of warranty they will
not support without charging me a fee. Anyone else having similar problems?

WinXP SP2 or SP3?

What updates did you install? Was WinXP SP3 one of them?

NB: Do NOT attempt to use System Restore to correct this problem unless
you've (a) first uninstalled all of the updates you installed this week and
(b) the behavior persists!

You might...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users (only), no-charge support is available by calling
1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your
local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are
associated with security updates.

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Both PC's are running SP3

the same 10 updates were done on both PC's:

7 were "Security updates for Windows XP"
2 were "Updates for Windows XP"
1 was "Security update for Windows Media Player"

Should I list the knowledge base numbers of the updates?

Turn off Automatic updates *first*...

For your own purposes, make the list. Use that list to uninstall them all.
Reboot. Problem still there? Use System Restore to go back to a point
before you installed any of those updates. It'll reboot, so then check if
the problem still exists again.

Anytime the problem no longer exists - begin installing *one* of the updates
at a time, rebooting and testing after each install. If the problem never
shows itself again - issue resolved. If the problem does show itself
again - you know the issue is caused by the last update you installed - come
back here and post *that* KB###### and the exact symptoms. ;-)

Hi,

I don't know if this changes anything or not but since my last post, I
discovered if I disable Trend Micro Internet Security, then I can connect to
the internet. The second PC with similar problems (running Windows XP Home
SP3 and Verizon Internet Security Suite) seems to have intermittent
connection problems. Not sure If I should try to troubleshoot with Trend
Micro?

Although that is completely up to you - you already *have* started to try
and troubleshoot with Trend Micro by disabling it. ;-)

Did Trend Micro (whatever product you have) do an update about the same time
as you did the Microsoft ones?

You could still troubleshoot the Microsoft ones - at least you have an idea
how to do that now and if it turns out to be a conflict between Trend
Micro/etc and a Microsoft Update - you'll know which one and be able to
report that all around.
