Constant Disk activity - even with Indexing off

Vista is thrashing my hard disk, for ages at startup, even though I've
switched indexing off.

Performance Monitor reveals Explorer.exe appears to be reading all the files
on my hard drive, and Svchost appears particularly fascinated by my Avi
files.

What on earth is Vista up to?

Have you ran a scan with your Antivirus and your AntiSpyware software?

Yes, nothing. Defender is also switched off.

I was experiencing the same problem. I fixed it by disabling EVERY
Vista Service installed by Nero 7 and above. ("NM*********")
I also uninstalled any of Nero's programs which start with Windows.
They are unnecessary, anyway, since none of Nero's Home Media programs
work as they should. I only use Nero Burning Rom. I tried the other
crap, and it is pretty worthless.

Nero's own indexing services are constantly writing and reading to the
HD. They never work anyway, but still keep the disk open constantly.
This could be what leads to the disk thrashing you are experiencing.

Vista is not the ONLY application which has this crazy and slow
indexing. I would not use any third-party application which includes
its own indexing services under Vista, nor would I use Vista's
indexing services. Disable them under Vista Services.. The old
Search works just as well, albeit a little slower (but not by much)..

Thanks for the tip Donald, I'll watch out for that when I install Nero.

But (as yet) I haven't installed Nero, and the accessing appears to be
coming from Explorer.exe.

It's very irritating.
