Constant reboot with SP1 with nVidia TNT2/ALi 1647

The computer constantly reboots as XP starts (while trying to load
alim1541.sys); briefly displays Stop Error 0x50.

Installed XP Home SP1 on Asus a7a266 mobo using the ALi Magik 1 (1647)
chipset with an nVidia TNT2 vid card. Reboots if I try to use Recovery
Console on the XP installation, or try to install XP in a second folder
(reboots just after the EULA screen). According to various websites and
ALi's site, SP1 shuts down AGP capability for this chipset/vidcard
combination but suggests adding a registry key re-enabling AGP. But I can't
in any way start Windows. Can I edit the registry w/o starting Windows?
From another computer? Is there a reg.exe that works in DOS? Thank you in
advance for any help!
