This has happened to me many times with v8 and 8.1, after contacting
microsoft support the advice they offered was to delete:
<C>:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows logon name>\Contacts\<Your
Messenger e-mail address>
and
<C>:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows logon name>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\<Your Messenger
e-mail address>
this works, however, it does not stop the problme reoccuring in the future!!
