Contact not transferred

I have been watching here and so for haven't seen anyone post the problems I
am having.
I have been using MSN Messenger since it first came out and other than
learning to use updates, have never had a problem until now.
I downloaded and installed Messenger Ver. 8.0.0812.00.
Problem 1. I lost all my contacts. None were transferred over.
Problem 2. I can not add contacts.
I manually add them and they show on my list, but I am told they are "not
on my contact list". The hypertext that you click to "add this person to
your contact list" shows to be active, but when I click on it, nothing
happens. No one shows to be online, even when they are.
Problem 3. When I open a message window to attempt to send someone a
message, moving my cursor anywhere on the "frame", the cursor shows the hour
glass, like something is still loading.
Problem 4. If I use my hotmail acct, I do not show online to my family and
friends, but if I send them a message, even though it shows they are
offline, they get the message and can reply back. Then we can chat without
problem.
If I use my MSN acct, my husband can see me online, but I
can't see him.
People can see my avatar, but I can not see theirs.
I have uninstalled and downloaded, reinstalled several times.
I done a "repair".
I show I am signed in.
I have checked every where I can find to make sure I do not have anyone
blocked.
I made no change to any setting when I upgraded.
My temp files are set to delete all temp files when I log off Internet
Explorer. (IE. ver 6)
So:
A. Any chance I will be able to recover my old contact list?
B. Need to be able to add contacts again.
C. Need to be able to see contacts when they are on line.
D. Need to have people see me when I am on line.

I have the same problem with one exception. The names are there but not
available on contact list. When I click on the add to contact list it is not
active.

At least I know I am not alone... now if we could just find an answer to the
problem :-)
