It is important to remember that the definitive "Live Contacts" list is
maintained on a Microsoft server - as opposed to the hard drive of your
local computer.
When you boot your computer and start Windows Live Messenger,
WLMessenger will automatically download your contact details from the
central database. In theory, it should also synchronize subsequent
changes automatically, if you change any contact details in WLMessenger.
However, upward synchronization does not always seem to work properly.
Similarly, Windows Live Mail is configured by default to sign in, using
the user's Live identity. Then, WLMail synchronizes the user's contact
details with the central database. Although WLMail is a different
program from WLMessenger, it depends upon the same, central database.
I cannot provide a precise explanation for the problem you experienced.
However, I suspect that upward synchronization from Windows Live
Messenger on your local computer does not work reliably. Alternatively,
synchronization via the WLMessenger program might be delayed - and could
be "lost", if you sign out from WLMessenger before synchronization with
the Microsoft server has occurred.
In my experience, the most reliable way to edit contacts on the central
database is via the webmail interface. Furthermore, I recommend closing
all other "Live" utilities before you perform the edit, to prevent
potential conflicts if there are different local versions of the
contacts list.
