Messenger basically sets its own colour scheme, so there's no direct way to change this
colour.
However, it might (I do not know this for certain) that a Messenger Plus skin could be used
to change this colour. You might consider making a skin request for this over at the Plus
forum here:

Or alternatively mess around with some of the ones already made for 2009:
http://www.msgpluslive.net/skins/by-date/
Of course this will require Messenger Plus Live to be installed
