It's not particularly MS Live Messenger issue (yet) but - since it suppose
to work with Yahoo Messenger and use its contacts I would like to share some
of my Yahoo! experience. Below are the excerpts from my correspondence with
Yahoo! support:

"I'm trying to use Intellisync 4 to transfer/synchronize contacts with
Windows Address Book (OE) without any
success. I'm setting my proper (I believe) User ID and password (I can sign
always with those to Messenger,
etc.) but when I open IS4 Yahoo it wouldn't sign me in.
What's wrong and what's remedy?
Marek Kalisz
PS. Some time ago I was asking same question and didn't receive any answer
from you - even some confirmation that you received my correspondence."

Yahoo answer:
"Thank you for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care.
Intellisync is a free downloadable product that you can use to sync your
Yahoo! Personal Information Management products such as Calendar, Notepad,
and Address Book, to your handheld device. At this time, help for the
Intellisync product can only be found online and it only supports the
devices and programs currently listed. We do not support this product in
any other fashion.
We apologize for the inconvenience, we appreciate your feedback and hope to
expand our service in the future.
If you would like to uninstall the Intellisync for Yahoo! product, you can
do the following: (simple steps how to use Control Panel to do it).
Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care.
Regards,
Yahoo! Customer Care"

It ****ed me of, so I answered them as follow:
"I know that it's free. I also learned that Puma Technology was acquired by
Nokia. However - this gadget is still advertised on yours (and your
associates) pages saying clearly "IS4Yahoo!" (and not, for example,
IS4MacDonald) so - you should feel some responsibility. Especially that the
only problem with it is (at least, what I had) that it CAN'T SIGN IN to your
YAHOO!
If you have no idea how to deal with it and don't intend to do it - REMOVE
IT from your offers/pages!
Marek Kalisz"

Anyway - someone can suggest some gadgets to synch/transfer contact
information en gross from/between Yahoo, MS Messenger (dead or Live),
Windows Address Book or so?

Greetings,

Been a long time since I heard someone mention this. With Windows Messenger (not Live) and
Outlook Express combined used to automatically do this for you. Unfortunately since MSN
Messenger 5 and above this functionality has been removed.

I think eventually we'll see integration like this again (automatically that is) as Vista
opens a few doors but it's difficult to make everyone play nice.

It actually wouldn't be too difficult to build a synchronization tool like what you're
describing (for Messenger anyway), I'm just curious as to why you wish to have your contacts
in the WAB.

WAB? Because I use (or intend to use) programs that can import/export
contacts from/to WAB. Anyway, I'm trying to get rid of Act (6.0) and switch
to Time & Chaos (or !ntellect). Also to be able to synchronize
contacts/address books with Corel Address Book, Yahoo Messenger and,
eventually, Windows (Live or dead) Messenger.
As I remember, several years ago MS tried to convince other companies to
create some kind of consortium and agree to some universal standard for
address/contact books. Unfortunately all this idea went to a dumpster.
Yes, AT&T (my DSL provider now) and Yahoo! Help are describing how to export
contacts to CSV but really there is no way to do it (no menu item on their
sites). So - I'm in some way just stuck.
Similar issue was with Unicode. In early 80s I was contacted by the Unicode
consortium. It was then in statu nascendi (sorry for my Latin). A few
times I did some input then - after that none since I'm very small shot
(5'5'"). Since then, however, Unicode standard developed tremendously and
has followers almost everywhere (except Corel - what is so strange, since
WordPerfect was one of the first word processors allowing me to write in a
few languages - already in early 80s).
Anyway, due to several serious system crashes during past few years I have
contact information scattered in several places, formats, etc. and would
like, finally, to put them together into one place or into programs that I
use now.
