I have recently carried out a complete reinstall on my pc including win7. I
made the error of not saving to disk my contacts lists. I have opened my
Hotmail account and there is my contacts list. Is it possible to import into
WLM my contact list from Hotmail ?.

Thanks

Yes you can. Go to your hotmail address, open the Contact List. At the top
is the "Manage" menu item. Expand it and find the "Export" button, export to
your local drive, then in WLM, open the Contacts, File|Import and find the
file you just saved.

That should work. HTH

If you sign in with your Hotmail address and password, your contacts should
synchronize and be available in WLMail. It may take some time for a total
sync (an hour or two) to take place.

The number of contacts and the connection do have a bearing on the time to sync completion.

I've not seen a sync to that extent though my largest contact list for one Live ID is just shy of 250(and needs some serious
pruning)
A fresh setup of that Live ID in WLM on Win7 took about 15 minutes on a 7Mbps max cable connection(currently tests to ~5.5)

I may be misremembering, but I think I've come across situations where a
total sync (contacts, calendar, safe and blocked senders lists etc) took
longer than some allotted maximum connection time, so was not completed
until the next scheduled sync took place. I was just indicating that the
process might not be instantaneous and probably erred on the conservative
side with 'an hour or two'. Remember all those posts about calendar syncs
taking *days* to filter through?

It probably depends as well what else is going on at the same time. Polling
for messages on the same account in the middle of a sync, for example,
could conceivably delay it, particularly where there are lots (thousands)
of messages involved.

Noel, I agree that we've seen some unusual times for contact migration when other factors are at work(migration, polling etc). You
are correct it is not instantaneous...in fact if watching, 15 minutes for 250 contacts can seem like an eternity. I'm certain in
similar situations others have aborted that process especially when tribal knowledge of prior clients allows export/import that
Contact file from/to in much less time(e.g. those same 250 into Outlook take less than 30 secs)

The Contact database approach may be more robust for sync than the prior method of single files and multiple folders for WLM and
Msgr, but it sure is much larger in size(unreasonable comes to mind) and slower than some of the more prior traditional methods.

If you are using a Live ID to sign on to Windows Live in WLM and that Hotmail account(all Hotmail accounts are Live ID's) then
importing your contacts into WLM may result in duplicates.

Noel's(Ildhund) suggestion to sign on to Windows Live in WLM would have prevented that duplication.

Both WLM and Hotmail have a remove duplicate feature.

Also note, that if your exported contacts(from Hotmail) had an other email, work email, IM address then those did not import when
importing into WLM since WLM can only map/import one single email address. That data will have to be manually entered, or perform
a sync with the web and then remove the duplicates.. Worst case scenario...the imported contacts without the other data may replace
the web data wiping those fields out. If so, don't lose that Hotmail WebUI exported csv file...it may be needed to reimport back
into the web interface so it can sync properly with WLM locally!
