Hello all,

I am continuing to receive this error (Error number: 0x80070424) when
searching for updates on the Windows Update site.

I am using Windows XP and have installed Service Pack 2.

I have done everything everyone has suggested in other postings, as well as
from my previous posting, and am right back where I started.

I even contacted Microsoft to no avail - geez! And now they won't respond
to my replies.

As it stands now, Autmatic Updates and BITS (Background Intelligent
Service) are started. Upload Manager does not appear in the Services listing.

Any additional help or sugestions?

Thank you,
Robin

Robin,

You indicate that you have done everything, suggested in other posts. It
would follow then that you have checked in run> services.msc for the listing
of Network Client.

Paul,

No, this was not suggested to me previously. I checked and there is no
Network Client listed.

How do I start this service? Suggestions/advice?

Thank you,
Robin

Robin,

Network Client is not a standard operating system service. It is apparently
a Trojan (i.e., of the Trojan boxed variations) that masquerades as a
legitimate service. You DO NOT want to “start” this quasi-legit service. If
it were in services (and I hope you checked closely) it would need to be
disabled and removed.

Since you indicate that “Network Client” is not listed in services I would
have to assume that this particular condition is not present on your machine
or that it has a different listing that I am unaware of. There are
approximately 90 legitimate services. One way of troubleshooting this
problem would be to compare your list of services with a known good list from
a properly functioning machine with SP2. Non-standard services then might be
considered suspect. Since services often have dependencies on each other
stopping or removing services without understanding their function is not
advisable.

Paul,

Thanks for the info! At least that's one service I don't have and am not
supposed to! I do use antiviral and antispam software diligently; is this
Trojan getting by antivirus protection?

Thanks for your help.

Robin

Paul,

I finally located your thread regarding the Trojan, netclnt.exe, etc. That
was a great post and I wish I had found it first! Straight forward and
succinct. But I do not have this particular thing happening that I have been
able to locate. Will keep searching because it is exactly my problem. I use
Computer Associates's eTrust EZAntivirus rather than Norton, and will look to
them for assistance as well. Thanks for your great help and posts!

If you hear of anything else, please post!

Thanks again,
Robin

Robin,
Not enough information to say for sure but my experience and that of others
suggests that it is flying below the radar. I used a wide variety of
utilities-antivirus, spyware, adware-- including a number of online
utilities. None of them picked it up; ultimately manual remediation was
necessary to clear the issue.

It does appear in the databases of Norton and other AV sites. The
information however is often scant and somewhat unclear. I’ve seen no
mention of SP2 issues.

Check again in your services for nwclnt (with a possible variable following
letter e.g., nwclntc or d or e or f etc.) there are several references that
this may be running as a service—though I have never seen it. It’s worth a
check anyway.

You may also wish to perform a search for certain files on your computer.
If you do, be certain that from an Explorer window Tools> Folder Options>View
(tab) enables “show hidden files and folders” also remove any checkmark by
“hide extensions for known file types” and “hide protected operating system
files…” Make sure the “Look in” field shows you are looking at your entire
hard drive.
Search your hard drive for each of these files: netclnt.exe, netclnt*.exe,
netmon.exe, and winlogon.exe. Be careful about winlogon.exe there is a
legitimate file by that name residing in the C:\ %windir%\system32 directory
and also in C:\ %windir%\servicepackFiles\i386 and C:\
%windir%\$ntservicePackUninstall$ directories. The Trojan file is located in
the **** system **** directory NOT system32.

You might also search for your “hosts” file. You can examine that file in
Notepad. Other than the commented out lines at the beginning--prefaced by
the # symbol--the only entry (unless you have customized this file) is
usually:
127.0.0.1 local host.

I had the same problem... tried all the fixes posted - nothing worked. When
I went to the update page one last time, I went to the settings link and
installed from there instead of from the main page. Basically what it did
was turn on or re-install the auto update and now it's working peachy keen.
