I have downloaded (KB920872) from the automated update in MS windows update.

I checked the update history and it shows it as successfully installed. Why
am I still being asked to download and install it. I have checked my PC for
viruses and spyware using MacAfee, Ad Aware and Spybot search and destroy and
nothing shows up. I did a system restore and it still comes up as needing
downloaded. I have rebooted several times and it has not helped.

I have now turned auto update off! Anyone have a solution?

Open Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Is KB920872 listed ? If yes, then uninstall it.
Follow these steps as laid out by Eric Brodish, MS :

> 1. Download the update from
> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...n&Hash=7LFJN64
> and save to the C:\ drive
>
> 2. Click on Start > Run

NOTE: There is a space between the last e and the /

If it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, then show hidden files,
folders, and system files:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the WINDOWS directory (folder)
Open the $NtUninstallKB920872$ folder and then the spuninst folder
Run spuninst.exe to remove the incorrectly installed update
Then follow Eric's steps as laid out above.

Hi mowgreen,

I downloaded the file to my desktop and tried to run it from the start menu.
I got a message saying it was an invalid file name. I then double clicked on
the downloaded file in my desktop and followed the instructions. It appeared
to have downloaded the file in the same way as using windows update. I
checked it was shown in the update history and then rebooted my machine only
to find in Windows update it said it had downloaded it and was asking me to
install it yet again again.

I did not uninstall the already downloaded copies, would that make a
difference

The file must be run from the root Drive, ususally C:\, not from the
Desktop in order to install correctly. It's specifically stated in the
directions posted by Eric.
If you download it to the Desktop running the command produces the error
message that you've seen.

Suggest uninstalling the previously "semi-installed" update first from
Add/Remove Programs.
Move WindowsXP-KB920872-x86-ENU.exe to C:\, not in a folder, but
directly to C:\.
Then run the command from Start > Run.
