I'm having trouble getting my control panel to work. I open it, and I get a
pop-up stating that Windows Explorer is shutting down, so thusly, the control
panel doesn't work.

I've searched high and low all over the internet, and have nowhere to turn
to find information on how to get it to work.

I run an Alienware Area-51 7500 GT

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2.66GHz
Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Alienware motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Windows Vista basic

Nothing installed out of the ordinary.

What's the fault bucket data for the crash according to the Problem Reports
and Solutions center control panel:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
?

Nice, but I don't use windows media player, I'm asking about the Control
Panel. There is no bucket data for the crash, it just stops working
altogether. I can't access any of the sub-categories within the Control
Panel, along with the Control Panel itself.

The data at that specific link is application-agnostic and is relevant to
any crash.

What's the exact text of the message you get? What changed before this
started happening?

"Window Explorer has stopped working" is the text box that pops up.

That should be specifically indicating that if you open up the Problem
Reports and Solutions Center, there's fault data there:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
With that information, I can potentially help you. Without that, you
probably would want to talk to actual techical support. =\

1) Run SFC>elevated cmd>type sfc /scannow
2) Try a restore point to before it broke if you have one.
3) Use the Vista DVD and run startup repair. That should fix it. Startup
Repair is not confined to fixing no boot Vistas; it can fix systemically
broken Vista or key broken features when you can boot.

How to Use Startup Repair: (Any of the links provide screen shots)

Hey Chris

i appreciate your help, but none of these worked. This problem wa
encountered after I installed a driver for my Creative X-fi Soundblaste
audio card.

Catch is, I need the driver to use the card, or I get no sound.
think a corrupt or improper image for the Creative Audio Console on m
Control Panel is causing it, and therefore windows explorer to fail.
can access all parts of my control panel through Windows Explorer Tre
itself, but I can't see any image for that Audio Console. Anyone go
any ideas

Probably want to contact Creative support folks about this. In the mean
time, remove the driver and see if it fixes things.
