Hi MVP guys,

I need help from you in following issue.

I have few query based distribution groups, that I want to convert to normal
distribution group.

Member of these query based DL is more than 8000 now. I want it to split it
into less than 5000 users. I need to apply group nesting for those groups.

Win 2003 R2, SP2, Pre win 2000.

Thanks in advance

That will be difficult because a query based dist group is essentially a
group that when selected as a recipient, get enumerated by the sending
Exchange server at time of being sent. Therefore, by default, the group is
really "empty" until used.

My suggestion is to either create a script that will run the same query the
query based distribution group is running, and export it to a text file
(csv, etc), then use another script to split the results into two and create
two new Distribution Group, then populate the new groups, then mail-enable
them.

Otherwise, manually create two groups, and look at the latest results of the
Query based group, and add them as needed into the two groups.

Hi ACE,
Thanks for the reply.

I have one query.

If I have one Query based group say A_ALL. If somehow I managed to remove
the members of QBDL(Query based Distribution List/Group) and add/split those
users to two normal DL say ALL-I and All-II.
For Exmpl.

Say A_ALL is a QBDL with 8000 users. I removed users from A_ALL QBDL and
added/spilt them to (4000 each group) ALL-I(normal DL) with 4000 users and
A-II(other normal DL) with 4000 users. Then I added both the normal DL
ALL-I and ALL-II to A_ALL QBDL.

Now, when A_All runs query will the all removed users again be added to the
A_ALL.

Please cleare me with this.

That's basically the plan I suggested.

And PLEASE keep in mind, that a Query Based Distribution Group does NOT have
any members. The Query Based Dist Group is simply a QUERY that is run
whenever anyone selects it and the results are returned at that moment and
that moment in time only. There is no 'group members.' They are not stored
as 'members' in the sense that a regular group does.
