Converting or importing

Hi! I am a Windows XP user who has just purchased a laptop that has windows
vista on it. I also use gmail as my main e-mail address with outlook
express.

What I would like to do, is take everything I have on XP's Outlook Express
(I mean, Address Book, Account Settings, RULES, and message) and get them on
Windows Mail so they are still functioning.

I have been able to bring my messages and folders over, however now my
Windows Mail is downloding all 3,500 e-mails that my Gmail account has left
on it, and it is not sorting them in the least. Rather than go through and
make more rules, is there a way I could import my rules to the new Windows
Mail? Also, it is not greatly important that I have my contacts saved, as I
have an e-mail from everyone of them and I can re-add them if possible, but
I had nearly 40 rules that I really don't want to have to try to re-add.
(Not to mention I haven't yet been able to add a single rule, as the Create
rule from message button is greyed out.

If you have any idea how to do this, please let me know!

You need to import the .wab file from Outlook Express to get your old
contacts. I'm not sure of the details of how to do this.

I haven't seen a way to import the rules in the months I've been on
this newsgroup. I have 1410 rules, so I'd be interested if my
computer with Outlook Express was still running.

You might want to check if these web sites offer any help on this:

If you had used the tool that Vista provides, Windows Easy Transfer,
it would have brought over all your rules and everything else.

Would it bring everything over from another computer? I am trying to
transfer everything from my old computer to my new one, which is also going
from Windows XP to Windows Vista. If it will still import, I have access to
my messages still and I don't mind back tracking a bit. I just never saw an
option for Windows Easy Transfer. Thanks for the great replies guys!

Yes, Windows Easy Transfer is what I used. When you first start up Vista
it presents you with a Welcome Center screen which (among other things)
has a "Transfer Files and Settings" option. So, you can either go back to
that Welcome Center screen, or go directly to All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, Windows Easy Transfer.
