I khave some music files on my computer that are saved in mp3 format. I want
to convert these files to WMA type files using Windows Media 10. Can this be
done with Windows Media 10? If so, please supply instructions, step by step.
If not, is there any other way to convert from mp3 to wma format?
I'm fairly new at working with music media files and would really appreciat
any help I can get.
Thanks.

To do it with WMP, you would have to burn the tracks as an audio CD and then
rip the audio CD to WMA - not a pretty thing to do. It takes one marginal
quality recording and turns it into another marginal quality recording. The
result is that the quality of the WMA will be even worse than the MP3. That
applies, too, if you were going the other way as well. Compressing
compressed files just makes them worse.

So, what exactly are you hoping to gain by changing them to WMA? Unless
you're going to lossless WMA (which is pointless if you're starting with MP3)
I suggest using MP3 for the ultimate in compatibility. Like I've said
before, every MP3 player plays MP3 - duh. Not every MP3 player plays WMA.

If you want the best quality conversion, rip the tracks again as lossless WMA.

Thanks, Dale, for the help. My best choice then will be to re-rip the
tracks(that I previously ripped on mp30 using Windows media to rip them to
WMA format.

There are a number of converter packages out there, most you pay for
(usually a small fee) some are bundleware (they come with other stuff,
probably stuff you dont' want). You just need to find the one that converts
in the direction you need.

There is an MP3 to WMA converter created by Microsoft, it's part of the
Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition. You can find it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/plus/dme/Music.asp

It costs $15 and can be downloaded right away. The Audio Converter in this
package will convert either to WMA (various formats and bitrates) or MP3
(various bitrates, whichever is your preferred codec.

I've personally used this and it's pretty simple to use. A wizard interface
where you can either convert entire folders or individual songs.
