Copies of the same song and wrong deletions

My problem is I have the same songs and I don't know how they got there and
if I select one then one to delete the hundreds of extras it does not delete
the ones I deleted. If I select the every-other song 10 in total that is
duplicated the system deletes the first 10 and leaves the second have. Is
there an easy way for me to delete all the songs and allow that system to
rebuild the database. Can I delete the database and rebuilt the music tree
the way I want to and have media player rebuild the database?
Thanks

What version of WMP and Windows?

Instructions for resetting the media library are at
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#library
Note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play
counts, and possibly ratings too.

My apologies, that link should have been
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary instead.
