Hi, Glenn.
In OE, WM and WLM, there are 3 Reply options (they are spelled out most
clearly in WLM's Actions menu):
1. Reply to Sender - Almost always the wrong response in newsgroups
because it sends an EMAIL, NOT a newsgroup post, to the Sender - who
probably doesn't want email. :>(
2. Reply to All - Almost always the wrong response in newsgroups because
it sends BOTH an email to the Sender AND a post to the newsgroup. :<(
3. Reply to Group - Almost always the RIGHT response because it posts a
Reply to the thread in the newsgroup. ;<)
For me, I've customized my Toolbar to show the "Reply group" button and made
sure the other two buttons do not appear on the Toolbar. (Note that the
Toolbar in News is not the same as in Mail, where Reply to group is not
available, of course.)
When I do receive an email from a newsgroup reader, I usually ignore it. If
I respond, I usually start with this boilerplate:
Netiquette frowns on email responses to newsgroup posts unless email is
specifically invited or the subject veers from the topic of the newsgroup.
In a newsgroup, many readers may benefit; in email, only the two parties can
share. In a newsgroup, if I'm busy or out of town or just don't know the
answer, someone else can respond. If my response in a newsgroup is wrong or
incomplete, someone else can correct or complete it. If I give you bad
advice in email, you're just stuck with it. :>(
