Oh, there's nothing wrong with doing that - it works just as well, but
to compare:
*a) Mouse-over save*
Pause the mouse over the picture, wait for the "save" icon to appear,
click, type filename, click "Save". Thats 2 mouse clicks, assuming you
don't change the default save location "Pictures".
*b) right-click save*
Right-click, click "Save Picture As", type filename, click "Save".
Thats 3 mouse clicks, again assuming you don't change from the default
save location.
*c) drag-and-drop save*
Click start, click Pictures. Drag the picture from IE to Windows
Explorer. Click Yes to warning prompt. Thats 4 clicks (2 to open
Pictures), 1 for the drag-and-drop of the picture onto Windows Explorer,
1 for warning prompt.
Now, let's use all three of the above to save 50 pictures:
a) 2 clicks per picture * 50 = 100 clicks
b) 3 clicks per picture * 50 = 150 clicks
c) 2 clicks to open Pictures folder + (1 click for drag and drop * 50)
+ (1 click for warning prompt * 50) = 102 clicks. (you only need to open
the Pictures folder once.
You can see that methods (A) and (C) above are near identical. The
difference why drag-and-drop is better than the "pause mouse untill save
icon appears" is two fold :
- Drag and Drop is quicker - you don't have to wait for an icon to
appear
- The "save" icon does not work on small images. The drawback of methd (B) is that some website can use JavaScripts
embedded in their pages that disable the right-click menu.
I don't know if anyone will appreciate the above stats, but I think it
does serve to clarify the differences in ways of saving an image from
Internet Explorer. Perhaps thats why Microsoft removed the "pause until
save icon appears" feature. It was just too slow.
