1. Do you have Word installed on the laptop?
2. How did you copy them? Maybe they are read-only, if you used a CD.

Make sure Microsoft Word is installed, Microsoft Word does not come with
Windows. Which version of Word was previously installed on your computer? If
your XP computer was running Word 2007 and you try say open it on Word 2003
installed on Vista, it won't be possible because they are incompatible
unless you save documents created in Word 2007 in the Word 97 to 2003
format.

This has nothing to with Windows XP vs. Vista. The reason the
documents won't open is undoubtedly that you don't have Word installed
on your new computer.

Contrary to what many people think, Microsoft Word is not a part of
Windows Vista, nor has it ever been a part of any other version of
Windows. It is a completely separate product that is sold either by
itself, or as part of the Microsoft Office Suite.

If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows, came
with Word, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled it as part of
the package he sold you, not because that version of Windows came with
it. Some, but not all, vendors do the same with Windows Vista.

So, if you want Word on your new computer, you will need to buy a copy
and install it there. Alternatively, you might want to consider an
alternative product that can edit Word files, such as the less
expensive WordPerfect Office, or the freeware OpenOffice. Neither of
these is identical to Word, but if your Word documents have relatively
simple formatting, you may find that one of these will convert the
files well, and be acceptable for your uses.

Hi Dave
THANKS FOR THE POST
I installed Word but it was from my Millenium disc and not the XP. I have
now found my XP disc. Can I just install the word on that without installing
the rest of XP package?

I installed word from my old Millenium disc. I have now found my XP disc so
if I delete the old word and install word from my XP disc it may work?
I copied them on CD and also used a memory stick

Ken,

Sounds like a OEM set of disk they may have. Some came with Windows and the
software which I think the OP is asking about, I could be wrong.

Thanks Ken
Can I just copy it from my XP disc to my laptop or are you saying it's not
actually on the XP disc?

Microsoft Word does not come with Windows, you are confusing something,
Windows includes WordPad which is different, you can locate this program
under All Programs > Accesories > WordPad.

Microsoft Word is not part of Windows and thus it is not and never has
been on Microsoft Windows media.

If you want Microsoft Word, you may have to purchase it.

If you only need to read but not change the documents, use the free
reader:
