Copying XP files to Vista cannot complete due to permission error

I can't copy some of my XP files to Vista.

My XP Pro computer died and the new one has Vista Biz on it. I put my
old computer's hard drive in one of those USB cases, hooked it up to
the new one, took ownership of the only folder I want to copy on the
old computer (about 500M) and created a new folder with wide-open
permissions (everybody has full access) on the new computer, and
proceeded to copy my files.

It gets damn near finished when I get
"Destination Folder Acess Denied
You need permission to perform this action."

I don't understand how or why this is happening - it does get through
most of them. MyNewMachine\Administators (of which I'm a member) owns
the XP files, the destination is c:\users\Temp\, where "Everybody" has
full control.

Any ideas?

As you've given it, "C:\Users\Temp" is not a standard Temp folder,
which should be "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp".

Seing as you can read the files on the old hard disk, you shouldn't
have a problem. What happens if you create a folder in your "Documents"
folder, and try to copy the files there?

Same issue - I created a subfolder under "Documents" and tried copying
there, although I did not attempt to change the default permissions.

It's really strange - I've been copying other files from that drive
with no problem.

Still having this problem - anyone have any ideas? I've Googled with
no success and have played with the permissions with just about every
permutation I could think of. No success. I can get other files off
of my old drive with no problem. I can get pretty far with the folder
I'm attempting to copy, it's just that it will not complete, and the
files won't do me any good if I don't have all of them (my Perforce
depot for those P4V users out there). And there's so many, I can't do
a compare when it's done to see what's missing or with which files
it's having issues with.

I had a si,ilar permision problem with Vista where it didn't let me
uninstall or install any programs even when I was doing it from the Admin
account. I resourced to having to turn off the "User Account Control"
in the scurutry settings. I do get now a red warning shield in the system
tray next to the clock. But It solved my problems.

Yes, I did turn off UAC shortly after I received the new computer -
it's a pain!

Try taking ownership of the files:

Yup - tried that. MyNewMachine\Administrators (of which I'm a member)
owns the XP files.

This isn't a solution, but just to let you know you're not alone. In my
case, I've copied about 10,000 files over from a mapped drive on an XP
machine, but ONE file (a simple RTF document) is refusing to copy,
claiming (falsely) that I do not have permission to WRITE it.

The write message caused me to waste a lot of time googling looking at
write permissions on my Vista machine. But, in fact, inspecting the
source file (once I'd identified it by elimination) shows that Vista
thinks I don't have any kind of permission to get at it, read it or
change anything.

Yet if I remote into the XP machine and make a simple copy of the file
to the same folder as the original, Vista will take the new one without
problems. And so on. Not to mention all the other files from the same
folder, which copy without a flaw.

Not sure how I'm going to determine precisely WHAT is odd about that
file, and whether the oddity can be changed from the Vista end (which is
what you'd need to solve your particular problem). But if I do find
anything, I'll post here.

NB: your worst case solution is probably to do a quick XP install on a
spare partition - or even on your old drive - and see if that can then
access all the files in question, perhaps therefore copying them from
the XP side instead of the Vista. A pain, I know, but might be easier
than knocking your head against oddities like this one.

Vista permissions and file protections are so badly done, sigh. Not bad
as in insecure. Bad as in: "so inclined to prevent and create hassles
for legitimate access that any power users and many less-so are bound to
turn off layers of security which would be very useful if they'd been
PROPERLY implemented!". A total failure to understand wetware. Faugh!
