Core usage acting strangelly

This is a recent behavior that has started recently. Usually the cores on
my AMD Athalon 64 TK-53 run at about the same usage, with short spikes of
one core over the other. As I said, recently core1 has been spiking to 100%
while core2 is as low as 30%. When this happens, the computer becomes
unresponsive until core1 drops below 100%. But core2 never reaches above
60% in these cases.

Anyone have any ideas? BTW, Vista HP, on an HP pavilion laptop.

Thanks in advance,
Danno

If "con" is the opposite of "pro," what is the opposite of progress?
