What is the *correct* way to remove hotfix backups?

Hi,

I have read conflicting information on this in this newgroup.
One camp says, just delete the $ntuninstall...$ folders and then
clean up the Add/remove programs list afterwards. The other
camp says they shouldn't be removed.

I am in a situation where I *must* remove these backups.
I have cleaned up everything else. So: what is the correct
way to remove the backups leaving the registry and the
Add/remove programs list clean?

Cheers,
Geoff

I tried to remove it from Add/Remove and was greeted with a dire warning that to do so would make a list of programs as long as your arm not work. So backed out by clickin g"NO" and went to the internet and installed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425/

I'm still in business this morning, but who knows.
Yesterday I was minding my own business trying to shut down my system when a window popped up saying Data Execution Prevention had had a problem with Windows Update. Have no idea why or what. But I was told by others it had to do with the latest security update. I have no intentions of buying Vista when it comes out if this is what we will have to put up with. There's no reason a company like Microsoft with the resources ithas at hand should put out a patch like this. FWIW

You have not answered the original poster's question. He does not wish to
uninstall the updates. He wishes to delete the update backup files, without
uninstalling the update.

Geoff;
You do NOT want to uninstall the updates.
But you can safely delete the uninstall files as stated in the link MowGreen
gave.
Perhaps you are confusing the uninstall process and deleting the uninstall
files.

Some suggest copying the uninstall files to CD for use if an uninstall is
later deemed appropriate.
I feel if there are no problems after a few weeks, there will never be a
reason to save the uninstall files.
If after a time, there are no issues, beyond that the cause is something else
other than the update.
In either case, there is no reason they need to be kept on the computer.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the responses. The page at the link given by
MowGreen describes a procedure I have read about elsewhere.
It will work for me, but I was concerned it would leave the
registry still thinking the hotfixes could still be uninstalled
-that could get messy.

I guess I shall just have to try it and hope.

Cheers,
Geoff

Age is a lousy criteria to use in deciding what to delete and keep.
If someone has so little experience and age is the only criteria that can be
understood, they need to take the computer to a professional for proper
maintenance.
