I have a Dell computer that required an OS reinstallation, however the CD
shipped from Dell was lost. The person who performed the reinstallation must
have used a pirated copy of Windows XP Pro. My computer does not pass the
WGA validation. Is there a way to fix this by putting in the correct Dell
product key from the side of the computer without having to reinstall the OS
again?

Try reinstalling the version of Win-XP that originally came with your DELL.
Use the serial number printed on the OFFICIAL Microsoft Sticker on your DELL
Case, that you ALREADY paid for. If it doesn't work, file a CRIMINAL
Complaint against Bill Gates for FRAUD.

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting
to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or
genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall!

see for instructions

My friends Dell PC fails the WGA check too.
Only difference is he hasn't reinstalled XP, it is as it was supplied from
Dell.

So what do we conclude?
1) Dell is using hookey licence keys
2) MS WGA don't know a legit install from a pirate.

On ringing Dell he was told it's a Microsoft problem, contact them.

Contact the person who performed the Windows installation.
Did they in fact use a legitimate method or a pirated CD?
Since your CD was lost, the probability a pirated copy was installed is
high.
But you need to determine legitimacy before continuing.
See if this applies:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/invalpk.htm

If that link does not apply:
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/
And:
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/...=125&SiteID=25

Contact Dell for a replacement CD.
Even if you do not need it now, someday you will.
