Corrupt downloads

I've noticed when some installation or archive files are downloaded (.exe,
..zip, .rar) they are corrupt and need to be downloaded again.

I had a Windows XP system where I had to download all archives on another
computer and move them via USB stick. Anything I downloaded on it was
corrupted by either the operating system or the web browser (IE8 and IE7).

I think that when IE7 & IE8 download some files, file varification corrupts
files it's unsure of? Is this correct?

When i go to the properties of these files I notice that there is an Unblock
box to tick, sometimes if i do this before trying to open it the fiels don't
become corrupt, but i'm not sure of this.

Just had this happen on my up to date Vista Home Premium SP1 PC.

No. But please note that IE8 is in beta and if you have been getting this
corruption when using beta browsers, all bets are off. If the problem
occurs using RTM browsers and alternate browsers such as Firefox, continue
as per below.

This is far likelier caused by your Internet connection, or your modem, or
your router, or your network hardware (cables, switches), or your
antivirus/security software. Since the problem occurs on two separate
computers running different operating systems, if the corrupted downloads
happen from various websites (and not just when you're trying to torrent
the latest episode of [insert-your-favorite-show-here]), then I'd look at
the networking hardware side/Internet connection rather than the operating
systems. The only other thing I can think of is if you were using only IE
to download and hadn't tried Firefox/Opera/Safari/[some alternate], then
possibly some add-on you always installed on both computers is causing the
issue.

I have to agree with Malke. Downloading from legitimate sources, zips, rars
etc.. are very frequently corrupted. and if downloading again from the same
source yields a valid file then it's definitely something on your end.
Could be your virus software? spyware software? what unzip program are you
using?

I concur.
I never had files of any kind (zip or otherwise) corrupted by IE or XP,
Vista OS.

I'm using WinRAR. Just wondering if it could be IE's file varification
process after download? I have ISDN interent. Seems to happen when windows
thinks the file could be bad and blocks it.

Annoyingly I have to clear files and history to re-download with IE8 as it
won't redownload when I reclick the link. Just loads the same corrupt file
that it must store in the Temps.

You need to re-read the answers you've already gotten.

1. Try a different browser. We won't even discuss anything that happens with
IE8 because it is in beta. Post in the newsgroup for the beta if you want
to discuss IE8.

2. Try downloading from a different source if this happens at the same
place.

3. Call your ISP's tech support.

This isn't a Vista issue because the same thing happened to you with XP. If
the issue is solved when using Firefox or another alternate browser and you
really prefer IE, then post in the IE newsgroup. Or just use the alternate
browser.
