Corrupt files

I am not receiving automatic updates on Windows XP Home.
When I go to the site it gives me the following error: Files required to use
Windows Update are no longer registered (but I am) or installed on your
computer. When I click to correct this problem it goes through the whole
process but does not correct it and I come back to the same place. It would
appear that there are some corrupt or missing files as Dfreg also encounters
problems with some files (mostly update files) which it cannot defrag. I
have a list of them.
How do I correct this problem

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

I'll sure give that a try!

Thanks so much! That was awesome!
I only ran regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL and everything seems to be fine now.

Despite following every fix to the letter...Windows Update will not work. The
"LOOP" in the windows update should have had a workable fix available by MS
that doesn't require days of hunting through the Knowledgebase to find the
cure or learning more computer expertise than I want to have.
Windows Update has The Plague. I have tried the community suggestions,
emailed Microsoft support, none of it works. Suggestions? REAL fixes?. Where
are those files being downloaded by WU re:"Files required to use Windows
Update are no longer..." going when I download the 'fix' into my computer?
? The solution has to be out there somewhere! There is no error code to refer
either to which is a problem.

It is possible that you are three fingering WU - that they aren't plagued,
but you are. One way to get rid of Plague is to reinstall Windows. It is
a REAL fix. If you're loaded with cash, buy a computer instead or give
the box to a neighborhood geek and tell him to fix it. Otherwise (since
you've tried this and that) bite the bullet, do the prep, and reinstall.
