Hello!

Attempting to update Windows XP SP 2 gives 0x80070002 errors. I have tried
many solutions.

One possible fix is this:
"A problem has been identified in Filter Manager that can prevent you from
installing updates from Windows update.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
However, file WindowsXP-KB922582-x86-ENU.exe is corrupt.

Another possible fix:
"Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
File WindowsXP-KB842773-v2-x86-enu.exe is corrupt too.

Two corrupt files (even after re-loading) seems too unlikely. Is this a clue?

Thanks for reading

Are you attempting to install WinXP SP2 or are you running WinXP SP2 and
cannot install updates?

The problem is old, but I haven't really tried to solve it before. I haven't
re-installed Windows. No anti-virus, security suite, anti-spyware or firewall
is installed. I have yet to double check, that the built-in firewall in the
NVIDIA chipset is disabled.

I have tried the suggestions from the KB articles you mention. I have also
tried other things including re-registering some dll:s with regsvr32.

No anti-virus etc. *at the moment*. I disabled them to solve the Windows
Update problem. Formatting and re-installing seems extreme, since the problem
has been present about a year.

By the way, I could update the display driver for example with Windows Update.

Can anyone explain why the mentioned files are reported as corrupt? Other
people have had the same problem.

I can only work with the information you provided me. You said "no
anti-virus...is installed." You did not say that you'd disabled your
installed anti-virus application.

See TaurArian's reply or open a free support incident.

No problem with that.

I decided to try "Reset the default security provider in Windows XP", which
I previously considered irrelevant. For that I should start Windows in safe
mode, but it is not possible anymore: During boot-up I press F8 and select
Safe Mode. Then Windows starts loading until message "Press ESC to cancel
loading SPTD.SYS". After that whether I press ESC or not, the system restarts
itself.
