Corrupt installation after Windows Update

Today (15 Feb '08) I installed 5 updates from Windows Update that included
WIndows Defender definition update and 4 Windows Live updates. When I
re-booted, my laptop sounded a critical alarm and refused to boot. I managed
to get to the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery and looked at the Event log. There
were a number of new events around the update including two occurences that
showed a timeout in expanding the update file. Despite this failure,
apparently, the update proceeded and corrupted the config. There were also a
couple of Event log items indicating the registry file "was still in us by
another application."

The net is that I cannot re-boot. Anyone have any ideas on what I might try?
The machine will not boot into safe mode nor to the infamous "last known good
configuration". And, the Lenove Rescue and Recovery can see the hard drive
and, at least, list all the files on disk (i.e. not a hard disk problem).

Thanks for any insights

Bob

You got the install DVD? If you got it, then boot of the DVD and do a
Restore that way, or you can do an upgrade over the top of the existing O/S
installing the O/S putting it back down on the HD. The upgrade over the top
of the existing O/S from the install DVD will leave all programs you have
installed as is along with any data files you have on the computer.

Unfortunately I don't have a solution for your issue, I just want t
sympathize. I, too, had a system crash (twice) after Windows Aut
Updates installed this past week. Could not get it to start in saf
mode, refer back to previous version....nothing. I contacted support a
Sony and they were able to talk me through it, but I had to shut powe
off, then hit an "F" key to access the system to restore. You can see
am not a computer person. What I am trying to determine is if th
general consensus in the Vistahead community is that we SHOULD NOT b
doing Auto Updates?? If not, how do I decide which ones are right fo
me. Good luck with your problem. It is obvious this has happened a lo
in the last week with many types of computers. Yikes
