Corrupted IE 8 -- Maybe

I somehow screwed up and opened multiple copies of IE when it seemed the
system wasn't responding to requests to open one copy. I tried closing the
nine (!) copies that opened, but the computer froze, and I had to power off.
When I powered back on and tried to open IE, I got a message saying the
program had encountered an unexpected closing and asking if I wanted to
resume where my last session ended or if I wanted to start with my home
page. No matter which option I chose, IE would freeze.

I downloaded another copy from MS using Mozilla as my browser, but the same
message still comes up about where I want to resume my session, and IE still
freezes. I wanted to remove IE using the Control Panel feature, then try
downloading a new copy again. But I've been afraid to do that, Any
suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Ian,

I just diid the same thing as you (but not 9 versions).

I went to control panel's add/deltet file and took off the IE8, rebooted and
thought I'd need to download IE7 through Mozilla, but IE7 was repopulated,
all I had to do was confirm my previous IE7 setting.

The speed on 7 is so much better than 8 --- no more of those checks time
after time.

Imediate opening again!

Excuse my language but 8 really bites!

Good Luck on getting abck to 7!

You post from a WinXP SP3 computer. Is that the computer in question?

Does the behavior persist if you open IE8 in No Add-ons mode?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

I'm using Avast and Spywareblaster, and both were running in the background
when I reinstalled first IE7, then IE8. Neither download helped with the
problem.

My computer is four years old, and I don't recall what was preinstalled on
purchase. I never used either, however.

No. I'm not overly technically proficient.

Thanks,

1. Disable SpywareBlaster Protections then fully disable Avast AV.

2. Now uninstall IE8 & reboot twice.

How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

NB: Uninstalling IE8 will automatically restore your previous IE version
(i.e., IE7 or IE6).

3. Re-enable SpywareBlaster's Protections, if you wish, and tell me if the
behavior persists now (i.e., in IE6 or IE7).

Do NOT reinstall IE8 yet! Do NOT uninstall/reinstall IE7 yet either!

Thank you.

Have performed all the steps you suggested and am now left with an IE7 that
is "non-responsive." The message about the previous session having ended
unexpectedly, however, does not appear. IE7 just hangs.

1a. Try a Reset: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options |
Advanced | Reset IE settings | press RESET button | Reboot

1b. Check-in at Windows Update, select CUSTOM & scan | Install any critical
security updates (only) offered | If a Root Certificates update is listed in
the Optional Updates category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's
enhanced security.

If still no joy...

2a. Open Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System
Restore | (select) Restore my computer to an earlier time | Identify &
select the available Restore Point which was created (a) when you installed
IE8 or (b) on the day before you installed IE8 | Follow all prompts.

2b. Check-in at Windows Update, select CUSTOM & scan | Install any critical
security updates (only) offered | If a Root Certificates update is listed in
the Optional Updates category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's
enhanced security.

Need more help? No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation (and
uninstallation), set-up and usage (only) is available via the phone based on
your locale through 31 December 2009. Customers must be running Windows XP
or Windows Vista in a non-domain environment.

Thanks again. I'll try these suggestions later. I've been told by a friend
that you'd probably like to know that Maxthon works perfectly on my machine,
so am doing so now.

Maxthon should have been uninstalled before you installed IE8, Ian.

Sounds like corrupted add-ons to me. Disable them and try again.
