Corrupted JPEG Files

When I copied pictures (using Windows Explorer) from my XP Desktop to my
Vista Laptop using an external hard drive about 10% of my files were
compressed horizontally (resulting in a narrow vertical band). This
appears in the thumbnail and when opened with Windows Photo Gallery.
There is no problem with opening these files with Windows Media Centre,
Microsoft Office Picture Manager, Paint, or Canon's Zoom Browser.

Interestingly, when I open Windows Explorer these corrupted thumbnails
briefly appear correctly, then switch to the compressed version.

Pictures were taken with Canon cameras and are generally in the 2MB
size.

Any ideas?

Windows Photo Gallery seems to be the problem.
I'd suggest that you download a copy of IrfanViewer, determine if the file
opens and is properly displayed in it. Since it can convert as well, its
likely that you can use it to generate a file in the format that is
compatable with WPG.

It may be that the format is correct, and some info inside the file is
incorrect, causing WPG to display it improperly.

I would presume something is corrupted in the copied jpeg files. Some
programs are able to overcome this, some are not. It is even possible that
there is a write error in your camera itself or a problem with your memory
card.
This happens more often than people realize.
If you can open them normally in a program that then allows you to save them
in a lossless format I would advise you do that.
You can then resave them from the lossless format (e.g. tif) as a jpeg.
While that may introduce artifact you will probably not notice it and you
will not lose your images.

Have you updated the system to Service Pack 1 yet? Service Pack 1 has some
good fixes as regards image files.
