Could 'BITS' be the problem?

Hi all-
I have posted several times in this newsgroup because I cannot get Updates
to automatically install-even though I managed to resolve a problem with the
WGA KB892130 download.

I can now access and download updates but they just sit in their Software
Distribution Folder sulking.

I downloaded a 3rd-party 'FixWindowsUpdate' tool which found that my
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) was not starting.

Could this be behind some of the difficulties we are experiencing with
updates not installing themselves?

In the meantime I have turned OFF Automatic Updates since I suspect that if
my PC downloads and attempts to install them itself at Shutdown, the computer
is just going to 'hang' forever and a day....do you think this is wise?

Which Windows version are you running exactly?
The BITS is still not running if you start him manually?
Any error message?

Sure.

Ehm, and the Automatic Updates *service* is up and running? If not,
that (too) may be the cause of the problems you ran into.

No.

Hi Freudi-
Thanks for replying;

www.download.com/FixWindowsUpdates/
was pointed to by Carey in a previous post.

I am running Xp SP2--AVG AntiVirus /SpywareBlaster run in the background.

I have set my Automatic Updates to 'notify me'.
In SERVICES Automatic Updates is RUNNING.
Bits is now STARTED

Presume this is ok? I have run WGAdiag.2.

Anything else you think I should check?

Flo,
Have you run Services.msc and looked closely at the services?

Review Services.msc again (Start button > select RUN> type in SERVICES.MSC

The following services are needed by the processes at Windows Update. In services management console ( services.msc) they must NOT be *Disabled* in the Startup type.
They need to show a startup type of Manual or Automatic.
Here are the services & their Startup types:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) Manual
Cryptographic Services Automatic
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Automatic
System Restore Service Automatic

Check that. Logoff & restart your Windows.

Please disable both of them while trying to update - at least for
testing purposes.

You've started BITS manually?

See also Maurice's posting.

Change the RPC Locator service back to "manual". Maybe
http://castlecops.com/t106642-How_To...ly_Edited.html
will help.
