Computer hangs after putting in key, operating system: upgrading windows xp
home edition to vista basic home edition I tried just about everything. I
believe it happend after a partial install hang and system shutoff then
turned back on it reverted back to xp now the install won't go past entering
key no errors no lockup just hour glass and nothing for hrs on end if I ctrl
alt delete I can bring up the windows task manager and cancel installation
this is why I know it is not locked up if I do not enter the key will go
forward until I choose operating system then it again hangs with hour
glass..............????? It seems as though Microsoft might have installed
something in Installation which keeps it from installing a second time from a
computer which failed an initial install.

Are you installing from a DVD? If so the DVD might be corrupt try burn it
again at the lowest possible speed or alternatively extract the files to
your hard drive and run the install from there.

If you're having trouble extracting the files from the ISO please read my
upgrade experience thread

It may have something to do with the fact that your Product Key (if you
received it from Microsoft in the CPP) is for Vista Ultimate and will not
activate any other version.
