I went to upgrade from 32 bit Ultimate to 64 bit., after the Windows files
loaded I received a screen that said my CPU would not support 64 bit. I have
a ASUS P4C800-E-Deluxe mother board with a Socket 478. My current CPU is an
Intel Pentium 4 3.00 GHZ. Can anyone tell me what CPU I need to get to
support 64 bit or if its just a BIOS adjustment that is needed? thanks Ron

You'll need to replace both the motherboard and the CPU with 64-bit
hardware.

I believe you will need to know the series number of the processor...I'
not an Intel user, but the P4 in the 500 series and before may or ma
not support Intels EM64T support. The 600 series and up do I believe

Someone feel free correct me if I miss spoke ...

You can look at this link if you know more about your processor..

There is also a nice little free program called CPUID that will tel
you about your processor in much better detail which will perhaps mak
identifying 64bit capabability.... Hope this help

You are correct lid8nhx, Ron's processor does not support EM64T

Ron, unfortunatly your motherboard does not support any processors tha
feature this EM64T support. You will need a new motherboard an
processor, and possibly a new power supply [compatible with ne
motherboard] to run a 64bit version of Windows

I would recomend another ASUS motherboard of your choice, and an Inte
Core 2 Duo E6300, which despite it's budget price is considerably faste
than your current processor

Hope lid8nhx and I have been of help

If you look at the processor support for your board at the ASUS site.
It seems that you can support 64 bit processors (at least a few) botto
of the list, with a bios update.. Though I believe the choices are few.

Lid8nhx, are you sure about this? I can't make sense of the list yo
linked, but I am almost postive there are no x64 socket 478 processors
especially after viewing this chart

Brian

Indeed I believe you are correct on that... My mistake on the 64 bi
processor.. Doesn't look like there were any 478 64 bit inte
processors...~~ :

Ron, looks like you would need a change to go 64 bit..

But why do you want to use 64-bit Vista? Even if you could use a Prescott
with EM64T with that motherboard, what's the point, as it can only use up to
4GB of RAM anyway?
