Not a problem but I bought a gateway computer that has an AMD Phenom
quad core with 3gigs of ram.It came with Vista Home premium installed on it.
OK so I dislike Vista so I rounded up all My drivers and bought another
Harddrive and installed XP on it.Both os run very good with the
exception that on XP the AMD runs about 8 degrees C hotter than on
Vista. On Vista it idles at about 42c and on XP about 50c.
I contacted AMD and they said it was within specs.I am wondering if
anyone else has ever come across this situation.I used Speedfan and My
bios to arrive at these temperatures.
I have built a lot of computers before but I always used Pentium and I
never realized how much hotter AMD runs.

50-C ( 122-F ) seems fine. I have a C2D e6600 and it idles at 50-C.
A lot of times it's the amount of Thermal Paste ( or Pad ) and how the
Heat Spreader contacts the fan assembly that makes a big difference.
Not sure why your setup has XP higher, generally I've always seen a
higher CPU reading using Vista. The other factor is the Nanometer
spacing of the CPUs. I think Intel is at 45-nm and AMD is still using
a wider spacing ( 65-nm ) in it's chip fabrication.

Have you downloaded the driver for XP?

Seems about right. 50C is nothing to be worried about at all. You are well
with in spec.

AMD isn't really hotter. In fact a few watts cooler. The new quad CPUs
generally run around just under 100 watts. Not like a 35 watt AMX X2 or 75
watt P4.

But one has to like quad core, sure has kick. Download, AV, surf, run MqSQL
crazy, less impact. Both AMD and Intel quad cores are good choices. But
for dual core, AMD I like. It bounces back and forth.

Part of the reason probably is that XP perhaps is not power conserving as
much as Vista. But it is also one of the reasons why XP is faster too, it
does not have to wake-up to get going in a hurry.

I hear you on Vista, just haven't succumb to buying a second copy of the OS
in XP variety yet.

So I am running into the same issue with XP while running a Gatewa
MD2601. Didn't care for Vista, so I purchased a new hard disc ( Seagat
Momentus 320gb 7,200 rpm ) and threw XP on, with some difficulty I migh
add. In Vista, the CPU run @ 60 C while in XP, I run at about 80-85
without a load. That is one damn hot CPU I was recommende
Speedswitch for XP, but I'd like to understand the root of this evil
Vista, being the hog everyone says it is, should be killing the hardwar
resources. Yet XP, second best to Win2kPro, is heating my CPU Hel
. I will try the AMD driver posted here, but I'd like to know i
anyone knows WTF over. Thanx :

My CPU is a constant 40C and my motherboard is 34C . I have no dust bunnies and my
server is in a well ventilated spot with both side covers off.

Overheating can be caused by dust bunnies, computer placed in an area where there is
no air circulation Under Desk which is a No No,Junk piled around computer, and of
course the back of computer against a wall which completely blocks circulation

I thought it was hot for a CPU too at first, but searching Google I found
that this is normal for AMD Turion x2 RM-72.

You have to keep in mind the temperature sensor is located in different
places on Intel and AMD.

It maybe AMD places theirs closer to the area generating heat then Intel.
At least, that is what it seems to me.

Mike, that is just the thing. My tasks & services have all been gon
through and over looked and slimmed both down. Firefox being th
heaviest app running on the user level while most everything else i
system. Even so, these processes are not much different than wha
normally runs in Vista, which brings me and some others who have helpe
to the boggle. Unless there is a process that has a memory leak, o
using unnecessary system resources, I am at a loss. Again, this noteboo
was designed for Vista, not XP. But would it really make that much of
difference? Here is a screen of the processes, Pretty slimmed down
Firefox taking most of the system resources

Peter, I have taken this unit apart and blown the fan & mobo off. I ha
even went and put aftermarket thermal grease on the sink because it wa
overheating. Even when being blown out right away, CPU is still runnin
at 80ish C in XP and 60 C in Vista

The AMD's always ran a little warmer. You did not specify the model
but the range for Phenom quads is 90 to 140 watts - so pretty warm. Bu
at 50C I would not worry. That is far below an acceptable maximum o
about 75C
