Okay, I've checked a lot of the postings and have not seen anything quite
like my problem. First, I have two computers networked using XP
Professional's simple LAN network function. Computer A is my main work
computer with all sorts of programs from Office XP software to Quicktime,
Realplayer, Nero Express (CD burner), and other third party software;
Computer B is essentially my fax program computer but it has several programs
on it that are pretty straightforward Microsoft Office products and
Norton/Symantec or Adobe Acrobat -- mainly, though no CD burning or music or
media programs other than Microsoft's Windows Media player.

Yesterday (Friday, 9/17/2004) afternoon, I used Windows Updates and
downloaded and installed SP2 on Computer B, which had no problems with the
download or installation at all.

Yesterday evening, I had absolutely no success installing SP2 on Computer A,
although the download went fine both from Windows Updates and from the Web
Network Download page for SP2. When the process was in the installing mode,
the install would go through all of steps for "Inspecting your current
Configuration" through the "Creating Cabinets" phase, but would crash every
time at the "Running processes before install" phase.

This generated an error report which indicated in a Microsoft Online Crash
Analysis that the error occurred in "CD Recording Engine" created by Simpli
Software, Inc. Here also is the Error Signature:

Error Signature:

BCCode : 51 BCP1 : 00000004 BCP2 : 00000001 BCP3 : E36EAD40

BCP4 : 003533E0 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 256_1

These file included in error report

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini091704-02.dmp

C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\ sysdata.xml

Still with me? Based on this I went to Simpli Software and found some info
about either upgrading its driver or disabling or removing the driver, all of
which I did at different times in my many efforts to make the SP2 install
work.

I also uninstalled Nero Express and Realplayer both of which have CD
Recording/Burning capabilities.

After all of that, I still had no success; the install still crashed at the
same point in the process noted above. And no success with the file (266 mb)
downloaded from the Network SP2 download site. Same result (and I made sure
to remove all contents of the Datastore and Download folders).

Even worse, after uninstalling the CD Recording programs, deleting the
alleged malfeasant driver from Simpli Software, not only did the crash
continue to occur during install at the same place in the phases, I achieved
another low point in that my computer started rebooting on its own repeatedly
whenever I did a normal startup and tried to click on any icon on the
desktop.

All the problems have now been temporarily removed since I used my backup
and GOBACK from Symantec to restore my computer to its pre-download state.

So, with all of the above in mind, is there any way to install SP2 with what
I've got on the computer? Or am I just going to have to wipe the drive clean
and do a clean install with my original XP Professional disk, add all of the
updates including SP1, and then and only then, install SP2?

And will SP2 ever work with Nero Express and/or Realplayer or any other CD
Recording/Burning program?

I would really appreciate it if anyone can provide me with insights or
straight up advice about resolving the above issues. I am not averse to
doing the clean install if I know it will work; likewise, I will be very
happy to try the install again if I can get some help on real successful
workarounds.

You can also e-mail me a response or reply to

Hi Jeff,

It sounds, that my problem is the same. With the same results.
I tried this not only once. Everytime the same.

Then with the reconstraction from image I integrated SP2 in my
origional XP CD and tried installing from that new XP-SP2 CD.
Installation went fine till nearly the end when suddenly windows shut
down and restarted the installation again.
After the third time Windows told me sucsessfully installed and
rebooted.
From now on windos is running till the window how I want to start
,normal or safe restarting and so on.
Here I installed my image (SP1) again.
I actually do not want to wipe out all and install every thing new.
Hope to find a solution.

Hi Jeff,

I had excactly the same problem.

I tried this a couple of times. The installing routine stops at
different stages!!!

Today I found a solution.

I first uninstalled all burning software and deleted all virtual
drives, installed by the different burning software.

Delete these drives in the registry, so there is nothing left.
Restart
Make an image of cjust in case)

Now run sfc /scannow
If it stucks or spos etc run again and again.

Run SP2update again.

If it stucks or you get a blue screen. Do NOT reverse the installation
of SP2.
Run SP2Update again.

This was my solution.

Good luck

Hi Jeff,

Problem solved !

I tried installing a couple of times. The installing routine stops at
different stages!!!

Today I found a solution.

I first uninstalled all burning software and deleted all virtual
drives, installed by the different burning software.

Delete these drives in the registry, so there is nothing left.
Restart
Make an image of cjust in case)

Now run sfc /scannow
If it stucks or stops etc run again and again.

Disable all programms you do not need.
Virus programms
Run SP2update again.

If it stucks or you get a blue screen. Do NOT reverse the installation
of SP2.
Run SP2Update again.

This was my solution.

Good luck
