The above two paragraphs make me thing your hardware is failing -
mostly the randomness of it. RAM. motherboard, drive, something.
The nice thing is that I'm not an expert, so maybe I'm wrong...

I have a habit of putting things like that in a place where I can't
possibly forget. Then I forget. It frustrates me enormously - I hope
you can track the disk down.
But in your situation, once I found the CDs or DVDs, I would get a new
hard drive and restore the system to that one, then try to save the
useful data off of your old drive...
